A Letter from Trinidad W. Flores to Roque Estrada about Rolland

This is from a collection of documents revolving around spying during the presidential campaign and rebellion of Alvaro Obregon, 1919-1920. The book, Contraespionage politico y succession presidencial: Correspondencia de Trinidad W. Flores sobre la primera campana electoral de Alvaro Obregon, 1919-1920 is very interesting reading materal. Flores, paints Rolland as a respectable and practical man. Although Rolland was an ardent Carrancista, other letters in this collection portray him as playing both sides. Rolland definately did not like Mario Mendez, Carranza's Director of Federal Telelgraphs who led Carranza's espionage capaign against Obregon. Mendez was largely responsible for Rolland's early resignation as oficial mayor de comunicaciones in 1915. Flores, who worked in counterespionage for Obregon, tends to look on Rolland favorably, though not an ally.

The document that follows, which is partly exhibited, is another interesting document. It dicusseses the German influence on radio development in Mexico during World War I.

I had a meeting with Dra. Erika Pani at the Colegio de Mexico today and I decided to check out the Modesto R. Rolland materials available in their library there as well. As a friend of Jorge Rolland's had catalouged, there are a number of Modesto C. Rolland's works there, including:

 Algunas lecciones sobre el levantamiento de polígonos por deflexiones dadas en la clase de topografía, 2ed. (1916) and Comunismo o liberalismo? (1939). They also have listed a very interesting sounding document: "Patente de Rolland para producir concreto prefabricado y otros productos prefabricados de concreto: solicitud de prestamo al Banco de Londres y Mexico para la expansion de su industria," (1926).

 Sadly, however, this document is not actually  there. I have no idea why they have it listed.  After spending a significant amout of time obtaining a letter from Dr. Pani and convincing librarians  to look for the matierial for me,  I was told that the actual documents were at the Centre Cultural Gomez Morin. So, I will have to check there sometime in the near future. 
        

Tuve una reunión con el Dra. Erika Pani en el Colegio de México y decidió retirar el Modesto C. Rolland materiales disponibles en su biblioteca. Como un amigo de Jorge Rolland tenía catalouged, hay una serie de obras del Modesto C. Rolland, incluyendo:

Algunas lecciones sobre el levantamiento de plena por deflexiones dadas en la clase de topografía, 2ed. (1916) y Comunismo o liberalismo? (1939). Que también muestran un documento de un sonido muy interesante: "Patente de Rolland para producir concreto prefabricado y otros productos prefabricados de concreto: solicitud de prestamo al Banco de Londres y México para la expansión de su industria, " (1926).

Lamentablemente, este documento no está realmente allí. No tengo ni idea de por qué lo tienen enumerados. Después de pasar una significativa algún tiempo obtener una carta de Dr. Pani y convencer a los bibliotecarios para buscar el matierial para mí, me dijeron los documentos reales estaban en el Centro Cultural Gómez Morin. Por lo tanto, tengo que comprobar que en algún momento en un futuro próximo.

Tehuantepec: "La comunicacion interoceana" por Guillermo Prieto Fortun

       One of Modesto C. Rolland's longtime passions was the construction of a transportation route for sea vessels accross the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. He first became involved in the issue as a  agent of the Constitutionalist leader Venustiano Carranza (1860-1920) during the Mexican Revolution (1910-1920) while working for Salvador Alvarado (1880-1924), then governor of Yucatan. Rolland was not the first person to come up with ideas about interocean traffic across the isthmus, but he ardently promoted the topic during the 1940s and 1950s, including his own project to create a  ten-track railway system to carry ships across the land.

      Uno de pasiones de mucho tiempo de Modesto C. Rolland  era la construcción de una ruta de transporte para los barcos a través del Istmo de Tehuantepec. En primer tiempo que se involucró en el tema como un agente Carrancista durante la Revolución Mexicana mientras trabajaba para Salvador Alvarado, el gobernador de Yucatan. Rolland no fue la primera persona de presentar ideas sobre tráfico interoceánica en el istmo, pero él ardientemente promovió el tema durante los años 1940 y 1950, incluyendo su propio proyecto crear una diez pista sistema ferroviario para llevar los buques a través  de la tierra.

This site is for those family members, scholars, and those otherwise interested in the life and works of Modesto C. Rolland (1881-1965), an influential engineer, government official, and businessman in Mexico.

I became interested Rolland's life two years ago while conducting preliminary work on my doctoral dissertation for the University of Oklahoma, which I am presenntly researchng and writing in Mexico City.  Rolland lived a fascinating life, working with a number of important political leaders, intellectuals, and business professionals from the Porfiraiato until close to his death. After finishing my dissertation, which is on the economic and political effects of radio development  in Mexico, 1900-1934, I plan on writing a short book-length piece on the construction of modern Mexico revolving around the life of Rolland.

In addition to a place to share my own investigations, I hope to include the ideas, documents, and works of others interested in Rolland's life. Indeed, the idea for this blog came about after meeting Jorge Rolland, Modesto's grandson, in Queretaro, Mexico. He is a wealth of information about the career and family of his grandfather. I plan on posting either documents, reseach notes, or brief essays  related to Modesto C. Rolland provided  not only me but all those involved in this blog community.

I am new to "blogging;" so, it my take a little while before I get the site fully functional and easy to navigate. I appreciate your patience, ideas, and participation.

Este sitio está dirigido para aquellos miembros de la familia, los academicos y los que de otro modo los interesados en la vida y obra de Modesto C. Rolland (1881-1965), un influyente ingeniero, importante funcionario del gobierno, y el hombre de negocios en México.

Me interesé Rolland la vida hace dos años mientras se lleva a cabo trabajos preliminares en mi tesis doctoral de la Universidad de Oklahoma, que estoy presenntly researchng y por escrito en la Ciudad de México. Después de terminar mi tesis doctorado en los efectos económicos y políticos del desarrollo de la radio en México, 1900-1934, tengo pensado escribir un breve historia sobre la construcción de México moderno gira en torno a la vida de Rolland.

Además de un lugar para compartir mis propias investigaciones, espero incluir las ideas, los documentos y las obras de otras personas interesadas de Rolland. De hecho, la idea de este blog surgió luego de la reunión Jorge Rolland, un nieto de Modesto, en Querétaro, México. Él es una gran cantidad de información sobre la carrera y de la familia de su abuelo. Quiero desplazamiento de los documentos, notas o breves ensayos relacionados a Modest C. Rolland, proporcionados por no sólo  mi, sino todos aquellos que están implicados en este blog comunidad.

Soy nuevo en "blogs"; por lo tanto, mi tomar un poco de tiempo antes de llegar al sitio totalmente funcional y fácil de navegar. Agradezco su paciencia, ideas, y la participación.
